Inside
the home: As
you enter the 16,000 square foot home, there are paintings of Ethel and
Gaylord Parke Wilcox who built the home in 1935. Furnishings were purchased
from Gumps of San Francisco, and the lumber was shipped from the west coast.
Beautiful pine wainscoting and ceilings grace the living room, hallways
and library. Designed by renowned British architect, Mark Potter the home
was unusually modern for its time. Each of the seven bedrooms had a private
bathroom, there was an elevator to the second floor and an intercom system.
Mrs. Wilcox enjoyed the California designs she had observed on visits to
the mainland and Kilohana reflects that influence in the Tudor style
home. Walking the grounds you will observe quaint 100 year old plantation
cottages used to house guests and household employees.
| The
curving driveway leads to the front door of the home and beyond to the
parking area. Most days you will see one of two horse drawn carriages waiting
in front of the house. Guests can enjoy the 20 minute guided carriage tour
of the grounds for 15$ |

Seating
on the covered lanai, the old breakfast
room or private dining room affords a special peek into the lives of one
of Kauai's most influential families. Exhibits of linens, china and furnishings
make a visit to the home known as Kilohana a 'must' stop during Kauai explorations.
Kilohana sits in the middle of 35 acres of pasture, manicured grounds,
gardens and natural growth. As you leave Lihue heading southwest on highway
50, look to your right and you will see Kilohana across the pasture where
four gentle Clydesdales, a donkey and other animals graze.
